OPC DataHub -- The only OPC tool you need.
December 2008
Greetings!
Have you ever had a project where one small but important piece of the puzzle was missing? A little creative use of scripting, bridging, or other OPC DataHub features may close that gap for you, and help you deliver the project on spec and on time.

Success Story: Customizing an OPC connection

The Information System team at Fenclo Ltd. in Montreal, Quebec is running dynamic calculations on their data by connecting an OPC DataHub to their OPC server and Factelligence (their OPC client). Now, in addition to the normal stream of raw data, they can perform calculations on the live data as it flows from OPC server to client.

"Using the DataHub’s scripting engine, we can crunch the numbers on the fly, in real time, and feed those results into Factelligence," said a team member. "This is just one more example of how we benefit from the OPC DataHub."

Indonesian Automation Specialists to Offer the OPC DataHub

Cogent announces an agreement with AIC Consulting in Tangerang, Indonesia, to sell the OPC DataHub in the Indonesian market. AIC will use the OPC DataHub for real-time data integration projects in production facilities and across the enterprise.

"The OPC DataHub technology upholds our three pillars of competency," said Tonny Leonard, of AIC Consulting. "It enhances industrial automation systems, it provides links to enterprise IT, and it thus fits in well with our consulting services."

How to convert data types in the OPC DataHub

Would you like to convert the data coming from your OPC server into a different type? For example, does your OPC server give you data values as strings, where you really need them as floats? or I2 where you want R4? This kind of conversion can be easily done within the OPC DataHub.

The details are explained in the Cogent Community Forum FAQ, but briefly all you need to do is follow these steps:

  1. Create new points of the type you want, using a custom configuration file.
  2. Load the file on startup.
  3. Bridge the OPC server points to the new points.

Once the bridge is working, you can connect your OPC client to the new points, and the points will have the type that you have specified.
